Where: Merritt Island, FL • Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Notes: It is not often that we get to see two nearly indistinguishable species standing side by side for comparison. This made identification of these two different Yellowlegs species pretty easy. Even with well detailed shots of individual birds from that same day, I found myself mislabeling a couple of photos and getting the bird book out. The differentiating feature is the length of the bill relative to the size of its head. The Greater's being about one and a half times as long and the Lesser's bill is about the same length. It reminded me of a day when we had Greater and Lesser Scaup swimming next to each other at a local reservoir one winter. |
