Picture Of The Week 12-19-11

Where: Oahu, Hawaii • Kawainui Marsh

Notes: Despite being an abundant and widespread species in the continental North America, small populations of this bird are more prone to struggle. The Hawaiian Moorhen, endemic to the Pacific Islands, is suspected to be threatened by the Small Indian Mongoose which was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands to hunt rats, but the Mongoose found the local birdlife easier prey. Moorhen populations are difficult to estimate because of their secretive nature. This bird is listed on the Federal Endangered Species list so it was exciting to get such a good look at one.

I thought this would be a good post for this day, it marks Lori's and my first wedding anniversary. It's hard to believe a year has passed since we visited our favorite marsh on Oahu or watched for Red-footed Boobies at Makapuu Point.
