Picture Of The Week 10-25-10

Where: Willis Wharf/Northhampton County, VA • Eastern Shore

Notes: As we looked out over the mud flats at low tide, in hopes of finding a Marbled Godwit within range to photograph, I noticed some movement off to my left about twenty feet or so. This medium sized member of the plover family had stood up from where it once sat hidden on the ground. We stood motionless and quiet, hoping not to scare it off. Slowly I spun my camera and lens around on the tripod ninety degrees. The bird just stood there, but the background was very cluttered. After several minutes of us staring at each other, the bird finally felt comfortable enough to begin preening. It finally walked around a little bit, which eventually presented a smoother background, much to our delight. We simply enjoyed the opportunity to study this familiar shorebird at such a close distance.
