Picture Of The Week 08-30-10

Where: Henrico County, VA • I-295 & Rt. 301

Notes: Having noticed this scattering of telephone-pole like dead trees from the highway, I knew there was marshland underneath. A little exploring paid off upon discovering that the suspected marsh bordered a public road. I was amazed how many Green Herons there were visible. They were perched at various locations all across the wetlands. These birds are often seen fishing from bushes or from dead trees that lay flat, just above the water level. They often stand motionless waiting for small fish to approach within striking distance. This foot and a half long Heron migrates into the eastern half of North America for the breeding season and returns to Central America for the winter months. The above shot was captured not far from the road, just as I had decided to leave.
