Picture Of The Week 08-02-10

Notes: I was visited by a pair of Ruby-throats" for a few days back in late April as they passed through on their long migration. Most winter in Mexico, Central America, and in the Caribbean. Many traverse the Gulf of Mexico on a non-stop crossing taking 18-20 hours. But my sugar-water feeders had not been sucked dry once all summer, with hope I kept the juice fresh weekly. Suddenly the absence of Hummingbirds in my yard has passed. Over the past two weeks, an adult pair, along with a couple of juvenile "Hummers", have graced the flower filled pots and gardens with their presence. Like joyful daredevils, they dart around as one juvenile tries to lay a territorial claim on the feeders. I purposely have planted a variety of their favorite flowers around the yard for just such an occurrence. Where have they been over the last couple of months? Perhaps busily raising these youngsters? What ever the case, I am grateful they are around now!
