Where: Richmond, VA • Richmond Rookery Notes: Often I set out with a target subject or species in mind to photograph. That is often what directs me to a given location, in this case the Great Blue Heron rookery on the James River in the City of Richmond. While waiting for a heron to fly in with a new stick to its nest, this beautiful Red-winged Blackbird suddenly appeared in front of me. This boldly colored male seemed to be defending its turf against a rival "Red-winged" intruder. It perched only a few feet in front of me on the budding branches of a Sycamore Tree and began to blert its "conk-a-ree" sounding call towards the other bird. It flew back and forth from several perches, offering me multiple opportunities to capture the action. |
