Northern Shoveler

Where: Chincoteague, VA • Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Notes: The combination of powder blue, iridescent green, black, white and rust make this a striking creature. This handsome Northern Shoveler drake photo was taken at relatively close range. Opportunities like this, have made Chincoteague NWR one of my favorite places for bird watching and nature photography. You never know what is going to show up in the water-filled ditches and thickets that line the road back to Tom's Cove. Places such as this often produce "close encounters of the bird kind" because some of the wildlife becomes tolerant to the vehicle, bike and foot traffic. It's location on Virginia's Eastern Shore also makes this refuge a birding hot-spot during spring and fall migration.
