Notes: Hummingbirds are another example of the unique beauty and diversity that surrounds us. The jewel like irridescent throat and deep jade green back, make this male "hummer" a striking treat for any birder. This close range shot was catpured as I sat quietly and still in the open lawn waiting for this bird to return to its predictable perch. This habit of landing in the same spot is a common occurance for these birds, as they defend their territory from a favorite vantage point. This little gem is the only hummingbird species that breeds in the eastern half of North America. Despite their tiny size (1/8 oz. or 3.5 grams), many of these birds fly nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico during fall and spring migration, nearly 500 miles each way! To accomplish this, the birds fatten themselves up on nectar and insects prior to departure. Their long thin bill and the ability to hover make them especially well adapted to sipping the nectar from flowers. It is no wonder why hummingbirds warm the hearts of so many observers.
