Common Yellowthroat

Where: Powhatan, VA • Powhatan Wildlife Management Area Notes: In my experience, this is probably one of the most difficult species to photograph. This bird has a regular habit of creeping around low in dense thickets. Its almost constant movement reminds me of a Jack Russel Terrier. But sometimes these members of the warbler family will respond with curiosity to the "pishing" sound of a Wren. I learned to imitate this call as a youth. This sound has yielded an occasional good look at some birds that are otherwise difficult to see. Yellowthroats often react to this distress call with great enthusiasm. Usually all I see is a shadow darting around just behind the foliage of a near by bush. The above photo was captured at an unusual moment where this beauty perched on an open branch. I was lucky enough to have squeezed the shutter release at the right time.
