Adult Yellow-crowned Night Heron

Where: Kiptopeke, VA • Kiptopeke State Park Notes: As I arrived at the boat ramp are of Kiptopeke State Park and was barely out of my vehicle when someone pointed out this bird to me. But I passed up that opportunity to photograph this bird because a much less common species was reported in the area. Fortunately this young bird was still perched in the same spot when I finished photographing the rarer bird. I am occasionally faced with that same decision of what bird do I choose to shoot when there are a couple or even several options available. This seems to happen mostly during migration, when songbirds travel in small flocks or ducks move southward in multi-species rafts. I have also had to face this decision at the beach, where various sandpipers congregate to feed along the shoreline. Decisions . . . decisions!
