Where: Vienna, VA • 2008 Meadowlark Nature Photo Expo at Meadowlark Gardens (Rehab Bird) Notes: I jumped at the opportunity to photograph such a beautiful and unique bird. This is another of the education birds in residence at the Raptor Conservancy of Virginia (www.raptorsva.org). Public awareness of this species has risen over the past few years as some areas are seeing a significant decline in populations. This strictly nocturnal bird has the most wide spread ranges of any owl in North America. It is sometimes called the "Monkey-face Owl" because of its uniquely adapted facial features that provide it excellent low-light vision and remarkable hearing.
