Little Blue Heron
(Egretta caerulea)

Where: Chincoteague, VA • Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Notes: Nature photography nearly requires lengthy stays of observation from time to time. Watching herons and egrets feeding has shown me many interesting "tricks" as they search and devour food. I have seen Great Blue Herons eat fish and eels of massive that it looked like they would choke to death on them. I have seem Snowy Egrets hover inches over an alligator's heads to grab a nearby shrimp from the water's surface. But this activity of flipping a fish into the bird's mouth actually serves a purpose. It aligns the fish's scales from head to tail and allows the fish to slide down the heron's throat smoothly.
