Where: Chesterfield County, VA • Henricus Conservation Area Notes: The red plumage of the adult male Summer Tanager is one of North America's most striking neotropical migrants. This was a challenging bird to photograph as it moved about the understory trees of the deciduous forest. The dimmed light and nearly constant movement of the bird made it hard to get a high enough shutter speed for good exposure and sharpness. Fortunately this bird was calling near an opening along the footpath where more indirect light was available. I prefer natural lighting, even in low light conditions. The rosy tones and even color of this bird are accentuated by the soft morning sunlight.
