Where: Richmond, VA • My Backyard Notes: One place I spend a lot of time birding is right in my own backyard. I have spent time making my lawn and gardens bird friendly and hopefully enticing to local wildlife. I've done this by providing water, food and shelter. Even after being out on adventures to far away places to see unusual avian species, I still love to come home to my own yard and see the birds there. I still enjoy even or most common species. This male Bluebird nested along the property line in a neighbors bird house this spring. It often perched on the fence or bushes just outside our screened porch. Around the nest-box it would dart at any squirrel that came too close and often had to defend its home against House Sparrow invasions. It has been a real treat to have been graced with the presence of such a beautiful creature in my own backyard this spring. There is no place like home!
