Black-throated Blue Warbler

Where: Richmond, VA • James River Park Notes: Another spring beauty passing through on the way to its breeding grounds to the north and west. Each spring I have to renew all the Warbler songs in my mind. Knowing the voice of so many different birds is not easy, especially when some calls are so similar to others. But, it pays dividends to know them. The greatest benefit provided by this knowledge is the ability to single out a specific species from a large area. This saves huge amounts of time and effort. Otherwise I would have to sort through numerous songsters throughout each area. Species I never would have seen can be specifically pursued because I know ahead of time what I am looking or listening for. Also, if I am familiar with the habits of a specific species I'll also know where to look once hear them: up high, down low in a certain type of preferred tree... The more understanding I carry into the woods, the more enjoyment of nature I come out with.
