Red Morph (Rehab Bird)

Notes: Since this event is coming up next weekend, I thought this would be a timely posting. This is a rehab bird photographed at the Meadowlark Nature Photo Expo last year. These common six to ten inch tall little owls are found in nearly every habitat east of the Rocky Mountains from sprawling urban landscapes to rural areas. I can remember hearing their softly whistled whinny in the woods behind the suburban house I grew up in. On average about one third of this species comes in an alternative plumage or "red morph." They eat a variety of small animals, including rodents and songbirds, Screech Owls are cavity nesters and will often use a vacant woodpecker hole or a nest box designed for a Wood Duck. Pairs usually remain monogamous and stay together for life. When songbirds discover an owl during the day it is often harassed by the very songbirds it might feast on while hunting at night.
