Red-tailed Hawk
(Buteo jamaicensis)

Where: Eastern Shore, VA • Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge Notes: This young "Red-tail" was first seen hunting along the road side that leads to to boat ramp at the Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge. My partner first spotted this bird ahead of us on the ground by the edge of the woods. It was as if it had just tried to pounce on some unsuspecting rodent and missed. It flew ahead of us and retreated into the woods as our vehicle approached. Later as we exited, the same bird was perched on a Black Locust branch just off the edge of the road. I stopped and readied my camera. Then I drove toward the bird, still perched at eye level. I cut off my truck motor, raised my lens and coasted into the position I wanted to be in. I fired off a couple of dozen shots before the hawk once again retreated into the safety of the nearby woods. That weekend the raptors were migrating and almost every time I looked in the sky there was a hawk of some kind..
