Red-breasted Nuthatch
(Sitta canadensis)

Where: Falmouth, ME • Todd Wildlife Sanctuary Notes: Another shot from a recent trip to Maine. I had arrived several hours before the water taxi was to arrive, so I decided to take a walk around the sanctuary run my Maine Audubon. This Nuthatch was creeping head first down a nearby tree making little nasal sounding "beeps" as they often do. I crept toward the base of that tree hoping it would continue on its current course. It was perhaps too focused on foraging for food to notice me standing quietly nearby. Once it reached eye level, it flew to several low hanging branches. It was constantly in motion, creeping along each limb it visited. The bird turned briefly for this shot as if to say "cheese" and then was quickly back to the business of foraging.
