Green Heron
(Butorides virescens)

Where: Chesterfield County, VA • Pocahontas State Park Notes: Wildlife seems to be less reactive when approached from a canoe or kayak. Perhaps it is the absence of man's upright stance and cumbersome walk? This small, foot and a half long Heron was perched almost unnoticeable under a bush on a floating log along the Swift Creek boating area. My canoeing partner paddled me into just the right spot along the edge of the lily pads. We sat still and hopeful that it would come out into better light. It began to preen and stretch as if awakening from a nap. Then slowly, very slowly, it made its way down the log towards a frog and then it turned its focus on a dragonfly. Neither pursuit was successful, but it got the bird out in the open for a few shots.
