Where: Highland County, VA • O'Brien's House On the last afternoon of a weekend photoshoot I had observed a male Indigo Bunting singing from this perch. Many of our songbirds have favorite singing perches. So I anticipated the bird's return to its perch after I sat quietly for a while in the tall grass near the edge of the field. The light was soft and the direction was favorable. Soon the Indigo Bunting began to sing nearby. I thought it was working its way back to this branch; it never did. But soon this Tanager showed up instead. This was a pleasant surprise! The focus and exposure was already set to capture this moment using ample focal length and compensation for the blue sky background. To sit and wait often yields more results than to be up and walking.
