Red-tailed Hawk

Where: Richmond, VA • Downtown Market area Notes: During the late summer the Purple Martins begin gathering by the thousands in specific spots as they prepare for their 5,000 mile migration to southern Chili in South America (SEE: 08-04-2008 Photo). In 2006 a Richmond Audubon member, Jimmy Fitzgerald, located one of these roosts in the heart of Virginia's state capital. This phenomenon of nature has also been discovered by several predators, including a Peregrine Falcon and this Red-tailed Hawk that visit the roost almost daily for an easy meal. Despite the dismay of the crowd that gathers each evening at the roost, this predation is a natural process that keeps the Purple Martin population in check, both in size and in health.
