Where: Mackay Island, NC • Rt. 615 (causeway near refuge entrance) Notes: The causeway at Mackay Island is a favorite place to visit in the early morning hours when I am at the coast. I have often seen Bitters and Clapper Rails foraging along the edge of the expansive cattail marsh there. This heron has some of the most amazingly effective camouflage I have ever seen
