Where: Chincoteague, VA • Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge Notes: Watching the almost frantic feeding behavior of this bird convinced me that it was very content at its current feeding location. It constantly swung its long upturned bill through the shallow water to catch small invertebrates, It was foraging along the low tide shallows at the edge of the Tom's Cove causeway at Chincoteague. I had to change my position in order to get on the sunny side of this Avocet as it fed feverishly and did not seem to notice my arrival at the edge of the marsh grass near by. So I laid on my stomach and propped up the camera with my elbows and waited. After a short while this graceful animal slowly moved its feeding location in my direction as I had hoped. I have always admired this eighteen inch tall bird's elegant profile and striking coloration,
