Tundra Swan
(Cygnus columbianus)

Where: Washington County, NC • Pungo Lake Notes: Pungo Lake is part of the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). This lake is a sanctuary for many wildlife species, especially over wintering water fowl, Snow Geese and Tundra Swans. As spring returns to or area these graceful creatures return to the north to breed and renew their populations with new generations of cygnets (baby swans). This was one of the last photos I took on a mid-winter trip to Lake Mattamuskeet. We decided to explore Pocosin Lakes NWR on the return trip and this is where we found an emense flock of Snow Geese and Tundra Swans, numbering in the thousands. Sitting low in the tall grasses along the edge of the lake brought several flights of Swans right over head. Then a high ISO and shutter speed setting allowed the motion to be captured sharply.
