Red-tailed Hawk

Where: Kiptopeke, VA • Rt. 13 Easter Shore Notes: This immature Red-tailed Hawk was another cooperative subject. Heading south on a return trip from the eastern shore, we saw this bird sitting on the cross member of a road side telephone pole. I checked the rear-view mirror, clicked on my turn signal and slowed to a stop. This is all it usually takes to send most road side hawks into flight, but this one stayed. Then I opened my door and slowly stood outside; it was still there. I snapped a few shots, approached closer, and it remained on its perch. Soon I was as close as I could get from the ground. I took as many shots as I wanted and returned to me vehicle. It would have been easy to pass this bird by assuming it would flee. It is instances like this that remind me: sometimes all I have to do is try and not to past by opportunities when they present them selves.
