Common Goldeneye (Female)

Where: Willis Wharf/Northhampton County, VA • Eastern Shore Notes: When I originally spotted this bird from a distance, it was diving within the small marina cove at Willis Wharf on Virginia's Eastern Shore. I assumed it was a Bufflehead since there were three females feeding in the cove as well. I had to circle around to the opposite side of the cove in order to get closer and to put the sun to my back. By the time I reached to back of the inlet the duck was diving along the edge right in front of me. I had hidden behind a stack of crab traps and adjusted my camera, adding a little more focal length to ensure sharpness of the entire duck. Immediately after it dove, I moved to a position on the edge of the docking behind a post, poised and ready to shoot. Then the duck popped up right in front of me. I took several shots and it dove again. That was when I first realized it was not a female Bufflehead. When it resurfaced, I got a few more shots. After that it swam out of the cove back into the receding tidal channel. I immediately pushed the review button on my camera to look at the shots. I was pleasantly surprised to find several images of a duck I could then identify as a female Goldeneye. |
