Eagles are well into the nesting process by this time of year.

Where: Gwynn's Island, VA • Chesapeake Bay
Notes: The warm glow of the soft sunset light on this adult Bald Eagle allows the detail in both the highlights and shadows from overwhelming one another. Birds with drastically contrasting tones are a real challenge. Darks become to dark when the highlights are considered; or the highlight detail is "blown out" when the shadows are compensated for. Soft morning and late afternoon light are the preferred time to photograph because the diminished brilliance of sun light at these times reduces the harshness of the contrast that creates these challenges.
