Winter Wren
(Troglodytes troglodytes)

Where: Chesterfield County, VA • Henricus Conservation Area Notes: This tiny Wren is not much more than a ping-pong ball with a beak, two legs and tail. Typical of so many little birds, it was constantly in motion as it foraged amongst the logs and decaying branches for insects. Here it had stopped for only a moment to locate another spot to explore. And as cute as these precious three inch wrens are, their song has a beauty like no other sound in nature. It sings a continuous stream of melodious notes and remarkable trills, often lasting five to ten seconds. The tone of its song is clear and piccolo like. The first time I heard the Winter Wren's call was in a deeply shadowed Hemlock Forest in Botetourt County as a youth, the absence of under-canopy trees made the song sound like a siren singing in the shower.
