American Avocet

Where: Outer Banks, NC • Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Notes: Seeing these large one and a half foot tall shorebirds reminded me of days in my youth spent on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It was one of those clear full moon nights where no flashlight was needed. It was the night I saw my first Avocet. We were out investigating the marsh flats late one night hooting for Barn and Short-eared Owls with some birder friends that Thanksgiving weekend. We came upon a shallow inlet pool that was partially drained by the low tide. Just fifty feet across that mirror-smooth pond from us was a small group of Avocets. They were sleeping with their heads resting on their backs, standing on one leg in the moon light. It was a spectacular way to see such a beautiful species.
