Where: Richmond, VA • Bryan Park Notes: I really like the rhythmic symmetry of this image. The Kinglet is among the smallest of the winter birds in this area and perhaps one of the most difficult commoners to photograph. They are in nearly constant motion and usually surrounded by wings and vines as they flit around foraging for insects and their eggs. To even get one in my field of view is a task in persistence, but to also achieve focus and to get the shutter release button squeezed down all the way for a clear shot is another matter. This shot made me reflect on how few the occasions have been that I have seen this motionless four inch bird flash it's ruby-red head patch in thirty plus years of birding; only a small handful at best. The males are the only ones with this patch; it can be displayed at will. |
