Great Egret
(Ardea alba)

Where: Swan Quarter, NC • Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Notes: The sighting of a Great Egret, for me, has always been a reminder of mankind's impact on the environment, both positively and negatively. These magnificent birds, with their four and a half foot wingspan, were hunted for their plume feathers around the turn of the twentieth century. Once protected by law populations recovered and this bird is no longer considered threatened, but this species is still vulnerable to wetland habitat reduction. The Great Egret is also the symbol of the National Audubon Society (NAS), one of the oldest environmental organizations in North America. Audubon was originally founded to protect birds from being killed for their feathers. NAS and it's local chapters continue today to conserve and protect our environment and bird life. Collectively every little part that all of us play in impacting the Earth has a great effect, good or bad.
