Where: Nags Head, NC • Island in Currituck Sound Notes: Flight shots are an ever learning process for me. Part of which is the anticipation and expectation of the situation that might present such an opportunity and then having the equipment prepared to capture such an image. This Pelican was photographed on a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service research project trip last summer. I was so blessed to be able to be of service to help band baby Pelicans at the Currituck Sound nesting colony about a mile off shore from Oregon Inlet. Special thanks to The U.S. Coast Guard unit, where my friend Scotty Proco and family are now stationed. That group provided us transportation to and from the restricted nesting colony location. We banded an estimated three hundred or more Pelicans that morning. We moved into and out of the colony quickly to cause the least amount of disturbance possible. As we headed back to the pick-up point the adults immediately flew back into the short bushes and grass patches that they nest on to check on their chicks.
