Bald Eagle
(Haliaeetus leucocephalus)

Where: Swan Quarter, NC • Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Notes: Few birds impress upon my spirit when in their presence like these majestic creatures do. Several encounters whitnessing these very large raptors durring a year end trip left me amazed at their powerful flight and beauty. This flight shot was captured only moments after it left its perch along the Lake Mattamuskeet causeway roadside (photo left). I was excited when I began to see these images for the first time because out of ten frames captured, I had nine decent and focused shots. That is the opposite of my ussual percentages! At one point we saw what I guess was perhaps a family gathering of two adult and ten immature Eagles, with different ages of molt, made me hopeful for this species continued progress. The Bald Eagle was threatened with extinction in the lower 48 states because of DDT pesticide poisoning at one time. Protection under the Endangered Species Act, together with reintroduction programs, brought populations up, and the species was reclassified as Threatened in 1995. By 1999, some were suggesting removing the eagle from the Endangered Species List and in 2007 that happened.
