Red-shouldered Hawk Chick take at Stonewall, VA
|
Where: Chesterfield County, VA • Dutch Gap Conservation Area
Notes: This image was captured while birding with good friends on the Hopewell Christmas Bird Count. Spotted near the park's entrance gate by my observant carpool passenger, it was literally the last bird we added to our count list that day, From my initial glance, I believed this buteo to be am immature Red-tailed Hawk. But after looking over the photos aside my field guide later that night, I realized it was actually an immature Red-shouldered. It only sat long enough for me to shut off the vehicle motor and grab my camera off the back seat. Thankfully, my copilot had already rolled down the window and I was able to click off three shots before it retreated deeper back into the woods. It has been my experience that turning off the vehicle's engine is crucial to getting good sharp photographs when shooting from a car, unless you have a hybrid that shuts off automatically. The ever so slight motor vibration, no matter how smooth it feels, is enough to blur the pictures.
