Where: Virginia Beach, VA • Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge
Notes: Sometimes even when I think there is no way to get a shot, I am pleasantly surprised. Persistence paid off as I looked high and low, then left and right to find a crack in the thick undergrowth of branches where this Green Heron was lurking around. At the moment it stretched its neck forward from behind a branch that had blocked my line of sight, I was ready. One quick half pump of the camera's shutter release button to set the auto focus and then all the way down to capture this image. The opening only lasted a second or two at the most. I was not sure if I had captured anything at all until I downloaded the files later that night. Much to my surprise I found this "peek-a-boo" composition that is nicely framed by the small tree limbs and has a revealing expression of this bird's character.
