Where: Glen Allen, VA • Shady Willow Court
Notes: This Cardinal nest was in a Japanese Maple in front of my garage and about eight feet off the ground. I had removed the previous years nest from the same spot late last winter in hopes they would nest in the same tree again. This allowed me to use my garage as a blind and shoot from a ladder placed just inside the window. In this photo the female is brooding her newly hatched chicks while the male is bringing her food to feed them with. By the next morning all the chicks had been removed from the nest, probably by a snake or a raccoon. I was excited to have captured this moment before tragedy struck.
Ever since I began photographing the nesting activities of our avian friends, I have been amazed at the low rate of success to completely fledge their babies. This has prompted me use techniques that cause the least possible disturbance to any nest I photograph.
