Where: Glen Allen, VA • Shady Willow Ct.
Notes: Formerly known as the Sparrow Hawk, the American Kestrel is our smallest, most colorful falcon. It fills a fairly unique niche for a raptor because it feeds on large insects, particularly grasshoppers, as well as small rodents and birds. Kestrels are commonly seen perched on road side utility wires overlooking open fields throughout North America looking for their next meal. Their mustache like facial markings give them a regal look and are only slightly larger than a Blue Jay in size.
This close-up photo came from a private "educational bird" photo event which funds went to support the Richmond Audubon Society. This female falcon is a permanent captive and is missing its right wing which was amputated due to extensive injuries. It has been adopted by Kim Harrell a State Licensed "Rehabber" of Richmond, Virginia.
