Where: Appomattox County, VA • Rt. 721 near Stonewall
Notes: Many bird species claim a given amount of real estate as their claimed territory. Some will defend their claim with physical action, while others use song to announce their presence. Within most of these homesteads there are often only a few highly favorable perches. This bird which prefers scrubby forest growth, such as the result of clear cutting three to five years prior, often has a limited selection of such prime singing stands. With a little observation it became apparent that this stick was exactly such a spot. So I set up the tripod, focused on the branch and got out the extension shutter release cable. Before I finished my retreat to a nearby bush to hide behind, this Prairie Warbler was back up singing at her post.
