Barn Swallow Juvenile
|
Where: Bedford County, VA • Parker's Farm off Rt. 43
Notes: Man made structures have become an almost exclusive nesting location for this species that formerly nested in caves. The dark interior site of this nest made it necessary for an additional light source. In this case, I used a flat chrome panel to reflect sunlight in through a barn door opening. While the light is a little harsh, it did allow me just enough speed to capture this momentary action. While these chicks were only days old, youngsters from other nests had already fledged and were being fed as they sat on the wire fences at the edge of the nearby fields (left). The adult Barn Swallow is easily recognized by its forked tail and deep blue iridescent coloration. Special thanks to Mr. Parker for his permission to photograph this nest in his barn.
