Notes: In the mid afternoons, when the sun is too harsh for ideal conditions to photograph many subjects, I turn to flight and action images. The extra light allows for much faster shutter speeds, plus the ability to lower ISO settings and smaller f-stops at the same time. This equates to the ability to not only capture fast fluttering wings and moving objects, but provides ample focal length and low image grain at the same time.
This Willett image came as a bit of a surprise. I was focusing my attention on other action when suddenly it flew past me making its loud sharp call. Turning my attention, I swung my lens in its line of flight and got lucky with both aim and focus. This large common sandpiper is just over twelve inches in length and has about a twenty-eight inch wingspan. It goes from being a soft sandy-brown bird to an eye-catching flash of black and white when it takes flight.
