Red-headed Woodpecker
(Melanerpes erythrocephalus)

Where: Short Pump, VA • I-295 and I-64 Intersection Notes: Probably the most commonly known woodpecker by name. This nest hole was discovered while sitting in a blind waiting for Great Blue Herons to come feed their young at a local rookery. They tend to prefer areas where beavers have killed trees by flooding creek bottoms as this tree was. I am amazed at the persistence of nature to exist, even in the midst of human progress and habitat invasion.
