Northern Cardinal (female)
|
Where: Glen Allen, VA • Shady Willow Court
Notes: This could not imagine a better opportunity for a classic Virginia (or North Carolina) state bird and flower photograph. The Northern Cardinal is also the state bird for six other states: Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio and West Virginia. I had hoped for a shot like this last year but did not get the combination of subjects I had hope for. This year I spent some time pre-observing what part of the day the Cardinals perched in that tree while waiting their turn at the feeder; about 9:00 AM. After a few days the blooms reached a certain stage of maturity, then all I had to do was wait for the birds to show up. I sat in the blind with the sun to my back at 8:45 with a cup of coffee and within 30 minutes it all came together. The bird landed in the Dogwood on just the branch where it was free from obstructions, just where I had hoped it would. First the female (left) perched and then minutes later the male (above) sat in almost the exact same spot.
