Bonaparte's Gull
(Larus philadelphia)

Where: Spotsylvania County, VA • Lake Anna Notes: I have been becoming more increasingly aware of more and more opportunities for variety in my bird photography. This has included taking more vertical shots and capturing various natural behaviors like preening and stretching. One of my favorites has always been nesting behavior, but I have recently made a conscious effort to capture flight shots. This takes a little foresight because a camera's settings should be adapted for the increased speed needed to prevent motion blur. This shot was taken from a friend's boat on Lake Anna just after the Gull took off from where it had been floating on the open water. This is the non-breeding plumage of this relatively small gull; a little over a foot long with under a three foot wing span. In breeding plumage it has an all black head. It nests primarily in Canada and is the only Gull that regularly nests in trees.
