Great Egret

Where: Chincoteague, VA • Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge Notes: I have always preferred action shots to portrait poses because they reveal so much more of the life of an animal. Like telling a story, not just what makes this three and a half foot tall bird with a wing span of over four feet a Great Egret, but what does it do? For quite a while I watched this bird sitting in the morning sun cleaning and straightening (also known as preening) its feathers when it stuck its left toe under its wing to stretch it out and then it extended its long neck downward and its wings went up to finish its morning stretch. Now it was ready for breakfast.
