Tundra Swan
(Cygnus columbianus)

Where: Chincoteague, VA • Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge Notes: I have always loved the graceful presence of swans. These large birds are around four feet long from head to tail and have a five and a half foot wing span. It takes a long running start to get that much bird airborne. They usually travel in flocks in the non-breeding seasons. Several times I witnessed noisy squabbles break out within some groups which seemed odd for such an elegant creature.
