Savannah Sparrow
(Passerculus sandwichensis)

Where: Smyrna, DE • Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge Notes: This Savannah Sparrow was greatly cooperative as it sat for five or more minutes atop a stalk of grass just off the roadside. It would occasionally stop to feed on the seed heads it was perched on. When I first spotted this bird I was facing directly into the sun (photo to left), so I began to slowly circle out and around it at a distance of about forty feet until I had the sun at my back. Then a few steps at a time I slowly closed in. At about twenty feet away or less I began to shoot a few shots and then take a few steps closer. I ended up at a distance of about ten to twelve feet where I was shooting nearly full frame shots with the 1.4 X converter on. With ample light I was able to open up the f-stop a little to ensure ample focal length and still have enough speed to reduce the chance of blur caused by the camera or subject movement.
