Hooded Merganser
(Lophodytes cucullatus)

Where: Short Pump, VA • West Broad Street Notes: On a return trip into Richmond city I decided to take the short cut behind the Short Pump Wal-Mart on the way home. To my surprise there were eight Hooded Mergansers or "Hoodies" as they are nick-named on the small storm catch pond behind the store. I was glad that I had put my camera and lens in the back seat before I left home. This small pond made it possible to get fairly close the the flock because as long as they did not fly off they could only get but so far away.
