Notes: This extreme close-up of this Bald Eagle was taken at the release event made possible by the recovery efforts of the Wildlife Center of Virginia (Waynesboro). Property owners in Kingstowne, VA (Fairfax Co.) sighted this magnificent bird entangled in a bush and Animal Control was alerted and responded. Fairfax County Animal Control Officer Enna Lugo helped capture the bird and took it to a local veterinarian, then it was transferred to the Wildlife Center of Virginia. According to the veterinarians the bird appeared to be suffering from Aspergillosis, a fungal infection that affects the respiratory system. Her heart was nearly twice normal size and her kidneys were enlarged too. She received a months worth the antibiotic, antifungal and anti-inflammatory drug treatments. Once ready to return to the wild she was transported to Mason Neck State Park (Fairfax County, VA) by the center's Ed Clark. I was astounded by the awesome power of this creature! In the few minutes it took Ed Clark to open the cage, gather up the bird, remove the wing protectors and gently toss her into the wind I found my heart pounding heavily in my chest. This magnificent beast has a powerful presence sitting almost 3 feet tall from head to tail and having an almost a seven foot wing span.
