PIC OF THE WEEK: 10/23/17 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2017 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: After more than thirteen years of writing this weekly photo-blog, I sometimes find myself wrestling for new words. At first this seemed a struggle. But the more I think about it, it is perfectly natural. Since the annual movement of both the seasons and the birds coincide with one another, so parallels the subject of my passion. The White-throated Sparrow is a prime example of such an annual occurrence, especially since they have just arrived for the non-breeding season over the last few days. The beauty of this time of year can even entice the most dedicated football fans from their recliners, and occasionally it even pulls a teenager or two from their video games, to get out and witness natures splendor. It all seemed to start a couple of weeks ago when a Wooly-bear Caterpillar hurried across the road. Then leaves began trickling down to the lawn, Monarchs were gliding in the breeze, and acorns began bouncing off the garden shed’s roof. The fall festival season has rushed in and Halloween preparations have began around the neighborhood, further enticing us to be outdoors. Whether it is the colorful trees, organized events or the simply the wonder of migration, any welcoming step into nature is always accompanied with beauty and wonder. I pray the repetitiveness continues.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
